    Rain Barrel Installation

If you live in Toronto or Hamilton, a lot of rain will be coming through your gutter system, keeping in mind that Toronto receives an annual rainfall of 785 mm. So, what do you do with all this water?
Rain barrels are containers that collect runoff water from your gutter system. They connect to the downspout, which in turn connects to the eavestrough. You then connect hose or spigot connectors to drain the water for use on the landscape. You can grow your plants from water that is devoid of the minerals and chemicals characteristic of municipal water supply.

    Gutter eavestrough repair and cleaning

With a rain barrel, you will be doing your part in protecting the environment since you reduce the volume of runoff that enters the storm sever, thereby keeping fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals out of water bodies. Collecting rainwater also keeps it from your foundation, basement, and crawl space.

In case you are wondering, it is not illegal to collect rain water in Canada. However, rainwater collection is regulated by provincial bylaws, regulations, standards, and codes and municipal by-laws. At D’Angelo & Sons, we know all the by-laws in Toronto and Hamilton and we will guide you throughout the installation process.

Important Considerations When Installing Rain Barrels

The best place to install your rain barrel is near where you need to use the water. Since rain barrels supply low-pressure water, keep in mind that flow rate decreases as it empties and it is necessary to elevate the barrel to improve flow rate. If your water use requires more water pressure, you could always invest in a pump, but this is not necessary for such uses as drip irrigation. The low pressure is not suited for hose-end sprayers and sprinklers and you should, therefore, consider such options as garden hoses, water cans, and soaker hoses.

To estimate how much rain water you will capture, the rule of thumb is that you get half a gallon per square foot for 1 inch of rainfall. However, factors like the slope of the roof and the placement of the downspout also affect the amount of water captured.

You should make plans for overflow given Ontario’s high rainfall levels. Direct the overflow away from your home’s foundation. This could be through an overflow outlet or through a hose to drain the overflow. If you have the space, you could link barrels to collect even more water.

Zinc and other chemicals are often applied on roofs to fight algae and moss. If this is the case for your roof, or if your roof/gutters are made of copper, do not use the runoff on edible plants

    Choosing Between Rain Barrels

Your choice should be based on how much water you expect to collect and your personal preference such as your preferred design and color. Features to lookout for include:

    1. Opening lid:
If you will be using a watering can, you need a lid that can easily be opened and that is wide enough for this. If you have kids and pets around, a closed top or latched lid is the best option. You could go for a top that acts as a planter.
    2. Debris screen:
This keeps leaves, insects, and animals away.
    3. Flat-back barrel:
This fits close to the house, meaning the downspout would require less modification.
    4. Water outlet:
The outlet, be it a hose connection or a spigot, should be based on the intended use of the water. There are barrels that have second, higher outlets to fill water cans.
    5. Collapsible design:
      This makes storage easier.
    6. Hybrid/composter models:
If you have limited space, you could go for hybrid/composter models that allow you to stack composters on top, with excess moisture from the composter draining into the reservoir to add more nutrients to the water.

    Using a Rain Barrel

Water collected in a rain barrel is not fit for human consumption since it is untreated. Although the absence of chlorine, fluorine, and other chemicals is good for plants, it is not good for human beings and pets. The water is also not fit for washing food, cooking, or even washing your hands. Veggies and fruits grown using this water should be washed thoroughly in tap water before cooking and eating.

To prevent a mosquito problem which is common in stagnant water, use debris screens. You should also caulk all gaps that may allow mosquitos entry. Since mosquitos can always enter through the gutters and through overflow outlets, use the water you collect promptly before their eggs hatch. You can also use anti-larval tablets to kill mosquito larvae.

Using water promptly also prevents odors from developing and algae from growing. You should endeavor to use all the water before the next rain so you can get a fresh supply. Leave the spigot open when not collecting rainwater, with a hose connected or a splash block placed under it to prevent erosion and damage to the foundation. Whenever the barrel is not in use for extended periods, disconnect it from the downspout.

Strong winds can cause the barrel to tip over, especially when empty. You should, therefore, always leave some water. Regular inspections for damage and leaks are necessary. At D’Angelo & Sons, we do installation, repairs, and cleaning (debris and sediment removal) to ensure your water barrel is working as it should.

Toronto and Hamilton experience cold winters which can reach minus 20 degrees. Before winter sets in, drain the barrel and disconnect it from the downspout so that the downspout handles the runoff.

I needed several windows replaced, a new side door, all siding / soffits / eaves / flashing replaced on the house, and the gables re-sided on my garage. D'Angelo's pricing was competitive - add to which, windows and doors are manufactured locally and working with a single service provider to coordinate all the activity rather than try to do that myself was really convenient.

Very happy we decided to go with D’Angelo & Sons for our new roof. Easy quote process & was able to schedule the work in a very timely fashion, squeezing it in just before the snow came. D'Angelo and Sons did my roof last year and I was very pleased; they were well organized, came when scheduled and worked quickly. The roof looks great. This year, a storm damaged my roof. Carlos Vassallo came out and assessed the damage quickly and gave me an estimate. After dealing with the insurance company for months, we finally got the go ahead...

I am very pleased with the repair to my window capping that Steve F did today. He did excellent work and took the time to fix the problem and make it look fantastic. The problem was more complicated than it looked and he was careful to both protect my siding and windows as well as replace the capping perfectly. I would also like to thank the receptionist at D'Angelo...

We recently made the decision to fully replace our roof after losing many shingles to a windstorm. D'Angelo & Sons was very prompt in their response to our query and we had an appointment for an estimate a few days later. David was great; he was punctual and friendly. He patiently explained to us the condition of our roof and showed us pictures so we could see for ourselves. We feel secure in our decision in choosing D'Angelo & Sons for our new roof.

When we set out to replace our roof this year, we vowed not to make the same mistakes we did the first time. We researched, asked multiple questions, and Glenn was always there for us and happy to answer any questions we had. There are many, many roofers out there, and choosing D'Angelo was the best choice we could have made. The crew was pleasant and efficient, and also happy to answer any question. We would highly recommend D'Angelo to anyone that asks. I'll be calling Glenn in the spring to discuss our eaves and fascia!

My experience with D'Angelo and Sons was altogether positive. From my initial contact with Taylor, we were set up with an appointment with Josh two days later who gave us a full overview of what was needed and the cost. We had two other estimates and found D'Angelo to be comparable in price for the work that needed to be done. They estimated the project would start within 2-3 weeks dependent on weather and their projected timeline was accurate. Jenn was our project manager and she maintain a high level of communication with us throughout the project to ensure that we were aware of what was happening. From first contact with the company to the completion of the project, there was a high level of communication and transparency in the work they were doing. It's been almost 8 weeks since the project was complete and we've been through several significant weather events without issue. I appreciated the level of customer service that was provided by Taylor, Josh and Jenn (and roofing team) and their level of communication throughout the project.

My sincere thanks to Steve (Sales) for your patience with all our questions and Brad (PM) for keeping us in the loop every step of the way. Chad, you and your crew did a great job to get the siding replaced and the work area cleaned up, before our backyard birthday party as promised. Rocky - thanks for going the extra mile to make sure the lighting was done just right! This is our second project with D'Angelo & Sons, which again, was delivered the project on time and on budget. More important than the asthetic improvement from the new siding (which you were right about, Steve!), the house is noticably more comfortable inside, due to the air barrier and insulation added. If I hear of anyone looking for a good contractor for roofing or siding work, I will definitely recommend D'Angelo & Sons.

We had a massive project on our 3 storey 130year old Victorian Home. Roof replacement, siding, windows, soffits, fascia, eavestrough and other cladding and capping as required. The crews arrived on time, they worked safe at heights and steep roof pitches, they were kind & courteous, and cleaned up after each job was complete. As a home inspector, I found the workmanship to be top notch and would recommend them to any of my clients if they required work to their home.
